Have you ever seen actual “torii”(sacred gate)? It is a custom in Japan to place torii at the entrance of sanctuary. There are many tori gates in Miyajidake Jinja also, and this is the first gate. The Jinja has its Sando (pilgrimage rode), a long approaching path from the sea, and this Torii is located at the beginning of the Sando. Not long ago there also used to be a Torii even on the shallows.
